THE THREE PHASES TO YOUR CAREER AND THE CAPSTONE

We believe there are usually three phases to the arch of one’s career, using architecture as an analogy:

1) THE START: THE CORNERSTONE

The cornerstone (or foundation stone or setting stone) is the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation. All other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure. The same can be said to the start of your career. How you start your company, how you lay the foundations. This sets you on your path. (exclude the naff drawing below but it makes it clear….)

2) THE MIDDLE: THE KEYSTONE

The keystone (also known as capstone) is the wedge-shaped stone at the apex of a masonry arch or typically round-shaped one at the apex of a vault. In both cases it is the final piece placed during construction and locks all the stones into position, allowing the arch or vault to bear weigh.

Much like your career- its the main course, the bulk of your time, where you really succeed, make your money, your mark. Its what you become wealthy and known for. Its been the centre of your world for as long as you can remember. Often at the detriment of other parts of your life (family, fitness, fun, mental health, soul).

3) THE ‘WHAT NEXT’: THE CAPSTONE

The definition of a capstone is a concluding or crowning achievement, a finishing touch or a large flat stone placed on top of a wall or building. A capstone in your career can provide a new narrative about you and your achievements. It’s the icing on the cake, the something different post keystone. Like on a bridge, its not crucial to the structure but caps it off. Puts the finishing touches to a career, process or chapter in the arch of one’s career. Like the lion on top of the entrance to Clos Leoville Las Cases. Chateau Leoville Las Cases probably didnt need to lion on the entrance. But it makes the entrance to the Medoc property….
